Northern retains key commuter service

Northern Rail had planned to temporarily withdraw the 05:58 Barrow-Carlisle (08:32 arrival into Carlisle) and return 09:02 Carlisle-Barrow services between Whitehaven and Carlisle from Monday 14 September. This is a key commuter and student service being withdrawn just as people are being encouraged to return to work and students to return to their studies.

The good news is that following representations from CcRUG (and others) Northern have relented and will now retain these services.

Northern issued the following statement:

The 05:58 Barrow-Carlisle and 09:02 Carlisle-Barrow services will continue to operate in full therefore maintaining this key commuter service into Carlisle. As part of this change the 07:50 Barrow-Carlisle and 11:07 Carlisle-Barrow service will temporarily only operate between Barrow and Whitehaven. These services will be restored in full at our December timetable change.

The amended times will appear in National Rail Enquiries and other Journey Planners shortly.
